The Honourable Michelle Benjamin, Minister of Culture and Community Development, was pleased to welcome renowned soca artistes Mr. Ian Alvarez (“Bunji Garlin”) and Mrs. Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez (“Fay-Ann Lyons”) for a courtesy visit at the Ministry’s head office in Port of Spain on May 14, 2025. The meeting focused on the future of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival, with particular attention to preparations for Carnival 2026.
Also in attendance were Dr. Narindra Roopnarine, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Culture and Community Development; Mr. Videsh Maharaj, Permanent Secretary; and Dr. Aiyna Ali, Member of Parliament for Princes Town.
The discussions centered on enhancing the Carnival experience and supporting local artistes, creatives, and cultural stakeholders.
Key topics included the marketing and international promotion of Carnival 2026, with an emphasis on strengthening the global visibility of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival brand. Led by Minister Benjamin, the dialogue also explored collaborative opportunities to amplify the creative industries and expand audience reach through strategic marketing and digital platforms.
The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to meaningful partnerships with the cultural and creative sectors and expresses its gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez for their valuable contributions to the ongoing national cultural dialogue.
Carnival 2026 promises to be a celebration deeply rooted in local tradition while embracing innovation, with an eye toward expanding its global reach. This meeting forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing stakeholder engagement efforts in preparation for next year’s festivities.
